Myth 1: Only Supervisors and managers can be leaders…

Yes, it is true that we often look to our Supervisors and Managers to give us direction and guidance.  However, one’s job title does not define someone’s ability to be a leader. A leader is someone who is able to bring together different opinions, strengths, and abilities and recognizes the potential in others and in ideas. Think of the different roles within your center and how each role has opportunities to show autonomy and initiative. Whatever your role may be within your organization, there are always ways you can demonstrate leadership to benefit your team, pass on new ideas, and bring growth. Whether it is a new way of setting up your center, or a team building activity for staff meetings.  There is always something you can contribute to.

Myth 2: Leaders have all the answers…

A true leader is self-aware and acknowledges their own limitations. No one person has all the answers, so looking to our peers and mentors for support is vital not just to our own success but also to those around us. A successful leader will look to their team when they don’t have the answers themselves, and can admit when they are wrong, in doubt or just don’t know. Leadership does not mean the onus is on that one person to provide all the answers.  Rather, it involves the skills and mindset to be able to find the answers within your team.  It’s about listening vs. talking. Excellent leadership encompasses the ability to collaborate and communicate with others, self-awareness, as well as compassion for ourselves and our limitations, and the people we work with.

Myth 3: Being a leader is a one person role…

Leadership is not about establishing a hierarchy.  Rather, it is about establishing a reciprocal relationships between people where together they learn and grow professionally. Being a good leader means having the ability to develop and grow relationships with others.  By putting relationships first within your organization you can truly build a strong organization from the inside out. Remember it’s the simple things that matter… Try engaging with employees beyond what goes on everyday within the centre, be attentive to their mood; How are they feeling? How was their weekend? What do they enjoy doing outside of work? These personal connections put the ‘individual’ ahead of the ‘employee’ and begin to develop feelings of trust, kindness, friendship and loyalty that in the end will result in employees who value coming to work every day.
