Back to School; Tips for Inclusive Education

Back to School; Tips for Inclusive Education

Returning to school is daunting for everyone especially those families whose children require additional support. With this in mind InfoPeel has created a tip sheet to help provide some pointers on the ways families can ensure their child has access to everything they require to be successful in the new school year.

Learning About the School

School Orientation: At the beginning or the start of the student’s school year, ask the school for how they can deliver a safe and informative orientation method whether in-person or virtual. Such areas to learn about would be the student’s classroom, quiet spaces, and sensory rooms. In addition, if you are new to Ontario, request to be connected to Settlement Services such as a Settlement Worker in School.

Plan a Meeting: Request a meeting at a time convenient for all involved. Bring all supporting documents and other required items that would support in building an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Request to begin or continue to develop the transition plan and provide consent for the team to discuss and share information with everyone involved in the planning process.

Communication Plan: Compile a list with all members of the school team and their roles. Keep the lines of communication open throughout the school year for a seamless transition. Schedule meetings to maintain an up to date transition plan and ensure school involvement throughout the year. If required, request for Interpretation Services.

Transportation

Call your school to ensure student’s bus information is up to date and accurate including all necessary equipment needed. You can also find out information about your child’s bus routes and any changes that have been made.
